iberry ice cream shop with friends

Have I ever told you that I have the most amazing Thai teacher/friend! It was my roommate's birthday at the beginning of April and she wanted to take us out to an ice cream shop. It is called iberry and had a lot of yummy ice cream as well as great photo opportunities...

I am told that it is very cool to get your picture taken in this head

Last day of School before April Break

Thai schools are on their "summer break." Their school year is completed in March and starts up again in May (I believe). We, as an international school, are on the US school schedule of having June/July and part of August off, but we do get a nice 2 week "April Break" during the Thai New Year.

The last day of school before the break the students took the time to thank and show their respect to their teachers the "Thailand way." All the elementary students have Thai twice a week where they learn the language and many cultural traditions, etc. One of these traditions is to show respect and thank their teachers, parents, etc around the Thai New Year. They do this by pouring water over their hands and saying thank you and in our Christian international school saying "God bless you."
During the New Year most Thais go back to their families and will take the time to bless their parents/grandparents and thank them.
Third graders thanking their teachers...

you can see that they also "wai" their teacher
which is a sign of respect and we do often when we greet or thank people

The New Year is not complete without the Songkran festival...
The kids also got to play water games during their Thai classes

My roommates and our Songkran shirts...more about Songkran
in another post:)

We even got flower clips for our hair!

The kids had been reading a lot the month of March (see other posts about March Reading Month) so we celebrated (again) on the last day of school with ice cream cones!
All kids love ICE CREAM

Rainy Season in September

I just got these pictures from my friend. They were taken last September when we had some really heavy rains with flooding. Some of my friends had biked to dinner and so Gina and I took them home in her truck. It is pretty dark but you can see the water and my roommate said it got deeper on the road our house is on.

It is still just hot season here, but we have had some thunderstorms with lots of wind the last few nights. This is a blessing as it keeps the air clean and cools it down for at least a short time!

I am still standing! Just got the bike out of the back of the truck...

We got a little wet:) You can see the water by the guard  house

Ready to push the bike the rest of the way...
we were afraid the truck wouldn't make it any farther....

Reading Celebration

For the end of March Reading Month we had a celebration where the kids found out how many minutes they read, etc. The second graders did a Reader's Theater and some of the 4th graders shared poems they had written. Then we had CUPCAKES!

My friend Gina printed these cute Dr. Seuss pictures  and then we laminated them
and put them on the cupcakes.
The cupcakes were cute so I had to take a few pictures of them:)

Author Visit

During our March Reading Month we had an author come to visit from England. She spent time at schools in Bangkok and in Chiang Mai for about 2 weeks. She shared her books with the K-3rd grade classes (in 2 groups) and then she worked with 4th-6th (3 groups) on writing. It was great as the teachers also were there to get ideas along with the students about how to start stories, etc.
